Survive Scroll

生存 means “to survive.” In some contexts, it can mean survival, to live, to exist, or existence.

生存 is not a common selection for a wall scroll, but a lot of people search for this term, so I added it to the database.

Endure and Survive

凌ぐ is a Japanese word that means to endure and survive.

The full list of definitions includes to endure, to keep out (e.g. rain), to stave off (e.g. starvation), to pull through, to get over, to survive, to surpass, to outdo, to excel, to eclipse, and/or to defy.

倖存者 is the most common way to express “survivor” in Chinese. It literally means “lucky/fortunate surviving person.”

倖存者 is kind of an odd selection for a wall scroll, but there is no better way to say survivor in Chinese calligraphy.

生存者 is how survivor is written in Japanese.

生存者 is a strange selection for a wall scroll in Japanese culture, so consider that before you choose this for your calligraphy artwork.

The Weak are Meat, The Strong Eat

Meaning: Survival of the fittest

The Weak are Meat, The Strong Eat Scroll

弱肉強食 is a Japanese and Chinese proverb that literally means “The weak are meat; the strong eat” or “The weak are prey to the strong.”

The closest English version is, “Survival of the fittest.” It also fits with the ideas of, “predatory behavior,” or “The law of the jungle.”

幸存 is the most common way to express “survival” in Chinese. This can also refer to a survivor of a disaster.

However, this is not a common title for a wall scroll. But if you like the idea of survival, this is how to write it.

Return From Death’s Door

Return From Death’s Door Scroll

絕處逢生 is a Chinese proverb/idiom that talks of coming back from death's door or an unexpected rescue from danger.

Figuratively, this can be to recover from a seemingly impossible situation or to find a way out of a predicament.

If you have survived a near-death experience or severe illness, this might be an appropriate wall scroll for you.

Survival of the Fittest

適者生存 is the Chinese, Japanese Kanji, and old Korean Hanja for “survival of the fittest.”

All of our calligraphy wall scrolls are handmade.

When the calligrapher finishes creating your artwork, it is taken to my art mounting workshop in Beijing where a wall scroll is made by hand from a combination of silk, rice paper, and wood.
After we create your wall scroll, it takes at least two weeks for air mail delivery from Beijing to you.

Allow a few weeks for delivery. Rush service speeds it up by a week or two for $10!

When you select your calligraphy, you'll be taken to another page where you can choose various custom options.

A nice Chinese calligraphy wall scroll

The wall scroll that Sandy is holding in this picture is a "large size"
single-character wall scroll.
We also offer custom wall scrolls in small, medium, and an even-larger jumbo size.

A professional Chinese Calligrapher

Professional calligraphers are getting to be hard to find these days.
Instead of drawing characters by hand, the new generation in China merely type roman letters into their computer keyboards and pick the character that they want from a list that pops up.

There is some fear that true Chinese calligraphy may become a lost art in the coming years. Many art institutes in China are now promoting calligraphy programs in hopes of keeping this unique form of art alive.

Trying to learn Chinese calligrapher - a futile effort

Even with the teachings of a top-ranked calligrapher in China, my calligraphy will never be good enough to sell. I will leave that to the experts.

A high-ranked Chinese master calligrapher that I met in Zhongwei

The same calligrapher who gave me those lessons also attracted a crowd of thousands and a TV crew as he created characters over 6-feet high. He happens to be ranked as one of the top 100 calligraphers in all of China. He is also one of very few that would actually attempt such a feat.
